Bạc Liêu
The playboy prince, folk music and wind turbines in the sea.
Bac Lieu, now part of Ca Mau province, sits near the southern tip of Vietnam on the Ca Mau Peninsula, a flat land of rivers, canals and salt fields.
The town is known nationally for two characters: the "Bac Lieu Prince", a fabulously wealthy and eccentric playboy of the 1920s–30s whose family mansion still stands, and the composer Cao Van Lau, whose song "Da Co Hoai Lang" helped give birth to cai luong, southern Vietnamese folk opera.
Add Khmer pagodas, a mangrove bird sanctuary and rows of wind turbines standing in the sea, and Bac Lieu makes a rewarding stop on a deep-delta loop. Visit in the dry season, December to April.
